Dallas Soccer: Walter Hines and Ian Kalis
“Lee played as both a right back and a center back for a good program at Maryland,” said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. “He is very similar to Zach Loyd. He has a tremendous work rate and is tactically sound. He also has good speed and character.”
The 11th overall pick in the first round, Lee captained Maryland to a 14-4-3 season in 2011. The 5-10 native of Rockville, Md. led the Terps backline to a 1.05 goals against average. Lee picked up a game-winning assist in a 2-1 overtime victory against Rutgers on Oct. 4 and started all but three contests for Maryland in 2011.
Dallas’ third round pick (49th overall) out of St. John's University, Hines netted six goals and added an assist during his senior season. Hines started all 23 matches the Red Storm played in 2011. He is also a former member of the Costa Rican Under-20 National Team.
“Hines is an extremely quick flank player,” said Hyndman. “His speed allows him to excel in one-on-one situations and he is very good at getting in behind opposing defenses. He also has a strong work rate.”
FC Dallas final selection in the 2012 Supplemental Draft was Kalis, a defender out of Southern Methodist University.
“Kalis grew up playing in Dallas,” said Hyndman. “I always liked him as a center midfielder, but he played right back for SMU last season. He has a lot of passion for the game and I am sure he will bring a lot of good qualities to the team.”
A native of nearby Plano, Texas, Kalis’ soccer career flourished at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas where he garnered national attention leading Jesuit to a 26-2 record with 15 goals and 20 assists. He began his college career at Duke University, starting 16 games for the Blue Devils in 2008. Over the course of three seasons at SMU, Kalis played in 53 games contributing six assists and a goal.
