Jamie Benn just tied the score at 1-1, but give all the credit for the goal to James Neal. Neal was knocked to the ice behind the Avs goal, but somehow got his stick on the puck and slipped a beautiful pass to Benn, who slammed it home.
That's the kind of effort the Stars and coach Marc Crawford are looking for. When he talks about "playing with desperation," that's what he means. The Stars are showing some jump and enthusiasm in the early going, and that goal was the reward they were looking for.
Milan Hejduk had put the Avs on top 1-0 midway through the first with a wrist shot from the top of the circle that somehow slipped under Marty Turco's blocker. It looked like a soft goal from here -- a wrister from distance with no traffic in front. Turco hasn't been giving up this type of goal in recent games.
Earlier, Stars D Matt Niskanen knocked out Colorado's Cody McLeod with a slapshot that hit McLeod in the lower leg. McLeod crawled to the bench and was taken to the dressing room at the next stoppage.
