The Dallas Stars improved to 4-1-0 in the preseason with a 4-3 overtime win at Florida Tuesday night. Michael Ryder’s goal 1:11 into overtime was the game-winner. Tomas Vincour, Loui Eriksson and Toby Petersen also scored for the Stars.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 43 of 46 shots. He was particularly strong in the second and third periods, when he stopped 38 of 40 shots.

“Unbelievable,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said of Lehtonen. “He was the reason we came out of here with a win. I don’t how many shots there were in the third. He was the difference in the game, especially when you take that many penalties. Your goalie has to be your best player and he was.”

The Stars were shorthanded 10 times in the game and were in a lot of penalty trouble in the third period, when they were outshot 26-3.

Florida took a 1-0 lead 11:16 into the first period on a goal by Tomas Fleischmann. The Panthers held that lead behind goalie Jacob Markstrom through the midway point of the second period. But when Florida swapped goalies, bringing in Tyler Plante, the Stars caught fire.

Just 14 seconds after the goalie change, Vincour scored to tie the game at 1-1. Eriksson scored 1:20 later to put the Stars up 2-1 with 8:44 left in the second period. Petersen extended the Stars’ lead to 3-1 when he scored on a shorthanded breakaway with 1:31 remaining in the second.

The Stars got into penalty trouble in the third, especially late in the game. The big call was a boarding major on forward Ryan Garbutt. That was followed by a double minor on Mike Ribeiro and the Panthers took advantage, scoring two goals in 35 seconds. Jonathan Huberdeau scored on a five-on-three power play to make it a 3-2 game, and then Dmitry Kulikov scored on a five-on-four power play to tie the game.

“Our PK got a working over in the third and I thought we did a pretty good job,” Gulutzan. “It’s hard to kill a five-on-three for about four minutes, but I thought we did a pretty good job. They got some momentum. We have to be more disciplined if we want to win, but at the end of the day we’re still in the exhibition season and I liked the first two periods.”

Ryder scored the winner in overtime, taking a pass from Ribeiro on a two-on-one and beating Plante for his third goal of the preseason.

Quotable

“A lot of work there in the third period. In the third period we let the game get carried away from our hands. We took a lot of penalties. But it was good for me to play a lot of penalty killing. This is the part of the season where you want to get those situations and get different kinds of shots. It was good and it went well. It’s nice to get a lot of shots when things go your way.” – Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen, who stopped 43 of 46 shots.
