The Dallas Stars lost their third straight game and they lost big, falling 6-0 to the Florida Panthers at American Airlines Center Tuesday night. It was just the second home loss the season for the Stars, who are now 6-2-0 at the AAC and 11-6-0 overall. Kari Lehtonen played the entire game, stopped 24 of 30 shots and suffered just his third loss in 14 starts.
The Florida Panthers dominated the first period, outshooting the Stars 14-4 and scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers scored at 16:44 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. After Stars defenseman Adam Pardy was taken out of the play in a collision with Florida forward Marcel Goc, Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov joined the rush and finished off an odd-man situation from the left circle.
Just 1:24 later Florida made it a 2-0 game when defenseman Jason Garrison beat Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen with a blast from the point.
The Stars killed off a couple of Florida power play early in the second to keep it a 2-0 game, but the Panthers extended their lead to 3-0 late in the second with a goal off the rush. Stephen Weiss set up Tomas Fleischmann, who slipped by Stephane Robidas and roofed a shot over Kari Lehtonen.
The Panthers made it 4-0 with 7.8 seconds remaining with a spectacular tic-tac-toe passing play that Weiss finished off from below the right circle.
The Stars didn’t get their first shot on goal of the period until the 10:31 mark and were outshot 9-6 in the second. Florida has a 23-10 shots advantage through the first two periods.
Florida extended the lead to 5-0 midway through the third. Just after the Panthers killed off a Dallas power play, Versteeg scored on a two-on-one.
It turned into a 6-0 game when Marco Sturm set up Evgeni Dadonov on a two-on-one and the puck went by Lehtonen off Dadonov’s skate. After a review it was determined there was no distinct kicking motion and it was ruled a good goal.
