Stars end slide with 4-1 win over Oilers

The Dallas Stars snapped their five-game losing streak, beating the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 at American Airlines Center Monday night. Toby Petersen, Steve Ott, Michael Ryder and Radek Dvorak scored for the Stars. Kari Lehtonen stopped 17 of 18 shots for his 12th win of the season.

First period

The Stars outshot the Oilers 14-7 in the first period and scored the only goal.

That goal came 8:30 into the game when Tom Wandell centered a puck from behind the Edmonton net and Toby Petersen beat Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin from close range for his first goal of the season.

Each team had a power play in the period, but was unable to take advantage.

Second period

The Stars extended their lead to 2-0 prior to midway point of the second period. Just after Oilers forward Ryan Smyth missed putting the puck into the net on a wrap-around attempt, the Stars went the other way and Mike Ribeiro sent a pass from behind the goal line to Steve Ott, who scored from close range at the 8:58 mark.

The Oilers got on the board at the 15:24 mark when Jordan Eberle set up Ryan Nugent Hopkins, who fanned on his first attempt, but got control of the puck and scored off a wrist shot.

The Stars answered less than a minute later when Michael Ryder scored on three-on-one at the 16:14 mark to give the Stars a 3-1 lead.

Third period

The Stars killed off three Edmonton power plays in the third period and on the final one Radek Dvorak scored shorthanded into an empty net to make it a 4-1 game.
