Mike Ribeiro’s goal with 2:59 left in overtime gave the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames at American Airlines Center on Thursday night. The win snapped a three-game winless streak for the Stars.
The Stars lost forward Jamie Benn in the game. He appeared to get cut in the thigh by the skate of Flames defenseman Mark Giordano during a second period collision. An update on his status was expected after the game.
The Stars got the start they wanted, scoring 9:42 into the game to take a 1-0 lead.
The Flames tied the game with 53 seconds left in the period as Jarome Iginla finished off a two-on-one chance.
Shots were even in the period at nine each and there were no penalties through the first 20 minutes.
The Stars lost forward Jamie Benn in the second period after he collided with Flames defenseman Mark Giordano along the boards. Giordano’s skate appeared to catch Benn in the thigh. The Stars said Benn would not return to the game with a lower body injury.
The two teams traded power-play chances late in the period and the Stars scored on theirs to take a 2-1 lead. After taking a pass from Mike Ribeiro, Steve Ott score off a blast from the top of the right circle with 2:17 left in the period.
The Flames got their second power play of the game with 9:27 remaining, but Lehtonen came up with a huge save on Olli Jokinen’s rebound attempt to keep Calgary from cashing in on the chance.
But the Flames got another power play right after that one expired when Steve Ott was called for charging. The Stars were able to kill it off, but seconds after they returned to even strength, the Flames scored to tie the game. Jay Bouwmeester sent a cross ice pass to Mike Cammalleri, who scored into the open side of the net with 5:03 remaining.
The Stars won it with 2:59 left overtime when Mike Ribeiro made a behind-the-back move with the puck to shake a defender, moved into the slot and fired a puck past Kiprusoff from the slot.
