TSN, The Record and Newark Star-Ledger all are reporting that the NHL has rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils for salary cap circumvention.

The contract pays Kovalchuk $98.5 million over the first 11 years of the deal and then pays him just a total of $3.5 million over the last 6 years, including $750,000 in the 12th season and $550,000 in each of the last five seasons.

According to the Star-Ledger, the Devils can attempt to rework the contract and refile it with the league. There's also the possibility the NHLPA could file a grievance.
