Dallas Stars goaltending prospect Jack Campbell’s season isn’t over just yet. Campbell, whose Windsor Spitfires were knocked out of the OHL Playoffs Wednesday night, will now head to Slovakia, where he will one of three goaltenders for Team USA at the World Championship. Ty Conklin and Al Montoya are the other two USA goalies.
Dallas Stars forward Loui Eriksson and defenseman Nicklas Grossman both are playing for Sweden in this year’s tournament. Stars forward Tom Wandell was on the Swedish roster, but will not play after injuring his shoulder in an exhibition game against Finland over the weekend. He is expected to be out two weeks, which leaves him out of the picture to play in the tournament that lasts a little more than that time.
Among the Dallas Stars who were invited but declined for various reasons were Mike Ribeiro, Brenden Morrow, Jamie Benn and Steve Ott for Canada, Alex Goligoski for the United States, Kari Lehtonen for Finland and Karlis Skrastins for Latvia. Texas Stars defenseman Philip Larsen, a key player for Denmark in last year’s tournament, will not play this year due to injury issues.
Ex-Star James Neal was added to Canada's roster today.
The tournament, which runs through May 15, consists of 16 teams broken down into four groups for a preliminary round, where the top three teams in each group advance into the qualification round. After that it is the quarterfinals, semifinals and medal games.
Here are the groups:
Group A: Russia, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia
Group B: Canada, Switzerland, Belarus, France
Group C: Sweden, United States, Norway, Austria
Group D: Finland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Denmark
Versus will provide some television coverage of the tournament, including team USA games, the semifinals and the championship game.
