Steve Ott relishing chance at bigger role

By Mark Stepneski

FRISCO -- It was crowded out in Frisco today as more guys arrived in town and joined other players who have been skating on their own the past couple weeks.

Among the latest arrivals was forward Steve Ott. Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has said Ott is an important player this season and will be given an opportunity to land a spot in the team’s top six forwards. Ott is relishing the chance.

“Big time," Ott said after Tuesday’s skate. “I've talked to them, seeing where they I fit in and where they want me to play. I was always kind of mixing around. If someone went down I would jump up lines or was centering or left wing. I guess to have the opportunity to be a steady player in one position, I am excited for that and ready to grab it. I kind of exceled at it a few years ago, did well. I think it’s something I’ve been waiting for a long time, to be given an opportunity like this. I am really looking forward to coming into training camp, expressing that and showing where I belong.”

As for his take on the Stars' offseason free agent signings, Ott offered this take:

“All the new faces are a lot of strong, competitive guys,” said Ott. “In the essence of watching what Boston did and how that competitive team won the Stanley Cup, I think we can match everybody’s competitiveness and strength in the league with our new additions. I think it really makes us a hard team to play against. Personally, I am looking forward to that, too, because mentality-wise were going to be right there and extremely competitive.”

Some of the other guys on the first for the first time today: Alex Goligoski, Trevor Daley, Adam Burish, Vernon Fiddler, Mark Fistric and Krys Barch. Some of the Texas Stars guys on hand were Richard Bachman, Tyler Beskorowany, Brenden Dillon, Colton Sceviour, Luke Gazdic and Matt Fraser.

Some of this morning’s skate included five-on-five play. Here’s some video:
