Greetings from Prince Edward Island
By Mark Stepneski
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island -- Hello from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where it is in the low 50’s and feeling like hockey training camp this evening.
The Stars touched down in Charlottetown about 6:30 p.m. local time, which is two hours ahead of Dallas.
The Stars hit the ice tomorrow morning at the CARI Complex at the University of Prince Edward Island and will be practicing in two groups on two separate rinks.
There will be plenty of interesting things to watch over the next few days. Just the first couple days of training camp under new head coach Glen Gulutzan is a storyline in itself.
The new players have all been in Frisco skating prior to camp, but this is a chance to watch Michael Ryder, Vernon Fiddler, Sheldon Souray, Radek Dvorak, Jake Dowell, Adam Pardy and Eric Godard in a much different setting, especially the scrimmages.
It will be a chance to see if any of the younger guys who could push for NHL time this season - Brenden Dillon, Philip Larsen, Tomas Vincour, Matt Fraser, Colton Sceviour, etc. – can make an early impression in camp.
It’s a nice opportunity to see how young prospects like Jamie Oleksiak, Jack Campbell and Brett Ritchie stack up with the big guys.
Also, we might get an early glimpse of how Gulutzan sees some of the pieces falling together as far as lines and defense pairings, but I think that is for later in camp and the preseason because of the number of players who will be around to start camp.
