Matt Fraser scores two goals as Texas Stars win opener
By Mark Stepneski
It was an impressive season opener for the Texas Stars, who routed the Oklahoma City Barons, 7-0, Sunday evening at Cedar Park Center. It was also an impressive season opener for Dallas prospects Matt Fraser, Brenden Dillon and Richard Bachman.
Fraser, a left wing, had two goals, one assist and six shots in his AHL debut. Dillon, a defenseman, had three assists and a plus-three rating. And Bachman stopped all 21 shots to pick up the shutout in goal.
The Stars were all over Oklahoma City early, scoring 1:08 into the game off a shot from the point by defenseman Max Fortunus.
The Stars, who outshot Oklahoma City 17-3 in the first period, extended the lead to 3-0 with two five-on-three power play goals 15 seconds apart later in the period. Fraser scored from the right circle at 11:33 and Jordie Benn scored from the left point at the 11:48 mark.
The Stars scored three more times in the second. Dillon came out of the penalty box after a Texas penalty kill, got to the puck in the neutral zone and set up Fraser, who finished off an odd-man rush at the 8:27 mark.
Fraser set up the next goal, a power play tally by defenseman Dan Spang. Fraser’s blast from the right circle created a rebound that Spang knocked home at the 11:36 mark.
Just 33 seconds later Tyler Arnason scored on the rebound of a Francis Wathier shot to make it a 6-0 game.
Texas added one more in the third when Luke Gazdic scored on the power play, tipping home a Dillon shot from the point.
Texas ended up going 4-8 on the power play in the game.
