Stars down Hurricanes 5-2

The Dallas Stars opened their four-game road trip with a 5-2 win at Carolina Sunday. Jamie Benn scored two goals, Michael Ryder had one goal and two assists and Loui Eriksson had three assists for the Stars, who became the first team in the NHL to hit 10 wins. The Stars, who are 10-3-0, have the best points percentage in the league at .769. Kari Lehtonen stopped 30 shots to improve to 10-1-0 on the season.
The Stars opened the scoring 5:20 into the game when Vernon Fiddler set up Eric Nystrom off the rush and Nystrom beat Carolina goalie Cam Ward with a shot from the left faceoff dot. It was Nystrom’s third goal in the last four games.
The Stars extended their lead to 2-0 by cashing in on their first power play chance of the game. Stephane Robidas scored on blast from the point as Brenden Morrow and Alex Goligoski set up shop in front of the net at 12:55.
But the Hurricanes scored just 25 seconds later, cashing in on their first power play of game. Chad LaRose scored off the rebound of an Eric Staal redirection of a Jeff Skinner shot.
The Stars extended the lead to 3-1 with just 27.8 seconds remaining in the period when Loui Eriksson backhanded a pass from behind the net to Jamie Benn, who scored from close range.
The Stars added two more goals in the second period to extend their lead to 5-1. Loui Eriksson got to a puck at the side of the Carolina goal and set up Michael Ryder, who roofed a shot over Cam Ward at the 3:48 mark to make it a 4-1 game.
That goal ended the afternoon for Ward, who was pulled after giving up four goals on 14 shots. He was replaced by Brian Boucher.
Ryder’s goal gave the Stars 11 goals over a span of 62:04 dating back to Friday’s game against Colorado.
The Stars made it 5-1 with a shorthanded goal with 2:00 left in the period as Eriksson set up Jamie Benn on a two-on-one and Benn beat Boucher with a shot from the right wing.
The Hurricanes scored on a power play early in the period to make it a 5-2 game. Tuomo Ruutu scored on a shot from the slot at the 2:03 mark.
