Stars lead, 2-1, after first

By Dennis Hall

The Stars took the lead, 2-1, on a goal by Loui Eriksson midway through the first period, but they also squandered a golden opportunity to take a more commanding lead.

The Eriksson goal came with 9:40 left. A shot/pass by Brad Richards slipped past the goalie and defense and bounced in off Eriksson's skate.

Later in the period, the Sharks took back-to-back interference penalties, giving the Stars a 5-on-3 power play for 1:15. Somehow, they managed only one shot and failed to put the puck in the net. Not their finest effort.

Through one period, San Jose has a 13-9 edge in shots. Marty Turco has been good in goal, and the defense has looked sharp. The forwards have struggled with their passing, but you can't complain when they score two goals.

San Jose is missing its biggest offensive threat, Joe Thornton, who is out with an ankle injury.
