The Stars opened the scoring at 8:36 of the first. Just after their first power play expired, a Jamie Benn shot from the right circle deflected off Loui Eriksson and into the net.

The Islanders tied at the 16:38 mark when Kyle Okposo’s centering pass off the rush deflected off the skate of Michael Grabner and past Stars goalie Richard Bachman.

There were a couple of great scoring chances in the final minutes of the period. Islanders forward Matt Martin shot wide on a breakaway. Second period

The Islanders scored the only goal of the second period, taking a 2-1 lead with 1:38 remaining. Kyle Okposo’s shot from the left circle got behind Richard Bachman and Okposo drove the net and pushed the puck over the goal line.

Stars forward Tomas Vincour left the game in the middle of the second period with a lower body injury and did not return.

Third period

The Stars cashed in on their fifth power play of the night to tie the game early in the period. Steve Ott backhanded the puck across the crease to Brenden Morrow, who roofed a shot over Islanders goalie Kevin Poulin at the 1:07 mark.

The Stars took a 3-2 lead 3:26 later. After Bachman made a couple of saves during a scramble in front of the Dallas net, Michael Ryder chipped the puck out of the zone to set up a three-on-one rush and Jamie Benn scored shortside on Poulin.

The Islanders had a power play with a little more than eight minutes remaining, but Bachman made a big save on Frans Nielsen to preserve the Stars lead.

The Islanders put the some pressure on late in the period, but Bachman and the Stars held the fort.
