Prospect Notes: Austin Smith plays final college game
By Mark Stepneski
Dallas Stars forward prospect Austin Smith (5th round/2007) wrapped up his college career today as Colgate lost 3-0 to Cornell in the ECAC consolation game.
Smith, the Dallas native who scored 36 goals in 39 games and is among 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s best player, will begin his pro career next season. There’s a chance Smith could play with the Texas Stars of the AHL the final part of this season to get a head start on his pro career.
Stars goaltending prospect Jack Campbell (1st round/ 2011) could be joining the Texas Stars soon as well. His junior team – Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League – won’t be going to the playoffs and the OHL regular season wraps up this weekend. There’s a good chance Campbell, who will turn pro next season, will head to Cedar Park soon to get an early start on his pro career.
