Stars rally, beat Red Wings in OT

Loui Eriksson’s goal with just over 41 seconds left in overtime gave the Dallas Stars a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena Sunday evening. The Stars, who are now 20-10-3 on the season, are one point behind the Red Wings in the race for first overall in the Western Conference.
The Stars, who overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, forced overtime when Brenden Morrow tied the game at 3-3 with 3:14 left in regulation. Morrow had two goals in the game and Eriksson had one goal and two assists. Brad Richards also scored for the Stars. Jamie Benn had two assists and Andrew Raycroft stopped 28 of 31 shots.
The Stars are 10-2-2 in their last 14 games and improved to 14-2-3 in games decided by one goal this season.
The Red Wings got an early power play and cashed in to take a 1-0 lead. Pavel Datsyuk’s backhand shot from the slot bounced off Stars defenseman Nicklas Grossman and by goaltender Andrew Raycroft at the 3:42 mark.
The Red Wings extended the lead to 2-0 at the 12:25 mark when Patrick Eaves banged home the rebound of a Niklas Kronwall point shot.
The Stars cut the lead to 2-1 just 1:31 later when Loui Eriksson skated into the Detroit zone and dropped the puck to Brad Richards, who shot from just inside the blue line bounced off traffic and past Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood.
The Stars went on their first power play late in the period and tied the game when a Brenden Morrow tipped a Trevor Daley point shot past Osgood with 2:03 left in the period.
The Stars will open the second period with a 4-on-3 power play for 1:17.
Some notes from the first period
* Loui Eriksson assisted on both Dallas goals in the first period.
* The Red Wings outshot the Stars 11-8 in the period.
* The Stars were 1-2 on the power play and will be on a third when the second period opens.
* The Stars won 10 of 19 faceoffs in the first period.
*Matt Niskanen and Brandon Segal were today’s healthy scratches for the Stars.
Johan Franzen scored with 16.3 seconds left in the second period to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Pavel Datsyuk got to a puck along the boards and put into the slot, where Brian Rafalski tipped the puck to Franzen, who roofed the puck over Stars goalie Andrew Raycroft.
The Stars had power play time early and late in the period, but couldn’t cash in. Shortly before Franzen’s goal, Detroit goalie Chris Osgood made a big stop on Loui Eriksson with Dallas on the power play.
Some notes after two periods.
*Both teams had 10 shots in the second period. Detroit had a 21-18 advantage through 40 minutes.
*The Stars are 1-4 on the power play and Detroit is 1-2.
*The Stars have won 19 of 37 faceoffs through two periods.
*Stars forward Steve Ott and Detroit Justin Abdelkader dropped the gloves in the second period and both picked up fighting majors.
The Stars tied the game with 3:14 left in regulation when Detroit defenseman Brian Rafalski turned over the puck in his own zone and Jamie Benn set up Brenden Morrow, who scored on a backhand shot from close range for his second goal of the game.
Andrew Raycroft came up with a couple of big stops to keep it a 3-3 game, making a nice glove save on Henrik Zetterberg and then stopping a Ruslan Salei point shot that found its way through traffic.
The Stars got a power play chance in overtime, but couldn’t take advantage. But with less than a minute to go the Stars got a three-on-one rush and Loui Eriksson scored from the left circle with 41.2 seconds remaining to give the Stars the 4-3 win.
