Stars enter break one point out of eighth
By Richard Durrett
Now that all the games have been played until the end of the two-week hiatus for the Olympics, let's just take a quick look at the standings and where the Stars sit.
They are ninth in the Western Conference, one point behind Calgary. By points and wins, the Stars are actually tied with Detroit for the ninth spot. But Dallas has the head-to-head advantage.
This is shaping up for one great stretch run. When the Stars return from the break, they play every other night in March. Yes, every other night. So do most of the teams in the league. So the clubs that can stay fresh and play consistent in a packed schedule will get a shot at the playoffs.
Calgary, Dallas, Detroit, Anaheim, St. Louis and Minnesota are separated by five points. Dallas, Detroit and Anaheim each have a game-in-hand on the other two. BTW, Dallas plays Anaheim twice -- once on the road and once at home -- in the final two weeks of the season. The Stars also face St. Louis twice. They play Minnesota on the road to end the season. They do not face Detroit or Calgary any more this season.
So if you had to decide now which one of those teams makes the playoffs, who would you choose?
