Stars getting bang for their buck
By Mark Stepneski
ESPN.com’s Page 2 is taking a look this week at which teams get the best bang for their buck in pro sports. When it comes to the NHL, the Dallas Stars are at the top of the list.
That’s not a surprise considering the Stars are on a tight budget - which makes them one of the lower spending teams - and they are one of the league's top teams.
In reality, all NHL teams are on a budget because of the salary cap. And the difference between the top spending teams and the lowest spending teams isn’t as wide as it was prior to the lockout, which is why lower spending teams are able to better compete these days.
In a cap world, if a lower spending makes good decisions, gets players to play to the level of their contracts and gets some people to play above the level of their contracts they can be highly competitive.
It’s not what you spend, but how you spend and how you much value you get for what you spend.
The Stars doing are doing it this year. Phoenix did it last year and is doing it again this year. Nashville seems to do it every year.
New Jersey ranks 30th among NHL teams when it comes to bang for the buck this season.
Anyway, the Page 2 NHL breakdown (along with Kari Lehtonen’s picture on a one dollar bill) is here.
