The latest in a series on top prospects of the Dallas Stars looks at right wing Alex Chiasson, who wrapped up his college career at Boston University this past season and then played briefly with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Chiasson, who was a junior, led BU in scoring with 46 points (15 goals, 31 assists) in 38 games. His 46 points were fourth among all Hockey East players and tied him for 15th among all players nationally.

The 21-year-old Quebec native got off to a slow start, but picked up points in 18 of his final 22 games, registering 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists) during that stretch.

“I stepped up after Christmas and had a solid second semester,” Chiasson said. “It was a great year in that we made it to the tournament. We had a good team, good young guys and good chemistry. I was just trying to be a leader in my third year and tried to lead by example.”

A couple days after Boston University was knocked out of the NCAA tournament by Minnesota, Chiasson signed an entry-level contract with Dallas and then joined the Texas Stars. He played nine games with Texas, picking up five points (one goal, four assists).

“He’s a big man, right shot. He’s more cerebral than I thought he was. He’s been well coached,” said Scott White, Texas Stars GM and Dallas Stars Director of Minor League Operations. “The detail of his game defensively is good, he makes good decisions with the puck, he’s strong along the wall and I sense that will improve because he’ll get some added strength over the summer, which he needs. He’s got a big frame; he just needs to fill out a little bit.”

Chiasson is listed at 6-4, 202 pounds. He was a second round pick (38th overall) in 2009. He’s expected to start next season with the Texas Stars, but should get a good look at training camp in the fall.

“He had three good seasons at Boston University and he stepped into Texas and didn’t miss a beat,” said Les Jackson, Dallas Stars Director of Player Personnel. “He was a good player in all the games he played there. Like all these young guys, it opens their eyes to what they have to expect at the next level.

“He definitely has the physical attributes and the talent to be a good pro. It will just be a matter of adjusting and it will just be a matter of seeing how long it takes to play at that level before he challenges for the NHL. But he is a really good prospect.”

CEDAR PARK, Texas -- Alex Chiasson’s first professional goal wasn’t one for the highlight reels, but it will always be a memorable one for the big right wing.

The 21-year-old Texas Stars forward busted down the right wing at Cedar Park Center, centered the puck and had it go off a Chicago Wolves defender and into the net.

“It was great. I had a lot of chances and it wasn’t the prettiest one, but the first one you just take it,” Chiasson said. “It kind of took a monkey off my back, took some pressure off.”

The goal came in Chiasson’s sixth AHL game for Texas. Chiasson, a second round pick (38th overall) in 2009, picked up five points (one goal, four assists) in nine games with Texas after wrapping up his career at Boston University.

“It’s been great. You never know what to expect and the guys have been tremendous to me, just making it easier for me,” Chiasson said as Texas prepared for its final games this past weekend. “It’s good that there are older guys you can look up to, guys like Brad Lukowich and guys that have been here for a little bit, Colton Sceviour, they make it easier for you. It’s good experience and I am just trying to be a sponge, learn as much as I can and try to carry that into training camp.”

Chiasson, a 6-4, 202 pound right wing, is considered one of Dallas’ top prospects. He was ranked third among Stars prospects and tops among the forwards in The Hockey News Future Watch 2012.

“He’s a big man, right shot. He’s more cerebral than I thought he was,” said Texas Stars GM Scott White. “He’s been well coached. The detail of his game defensively is good, he makes good decisions with the puck, he’s strong along the wall and I sense that will improve because he’ll get some added strength over the summer, which he needs. He’s got a big frame, he just needs to fill out a little bit.”

Getting the games with Texas was big for Chiasson, who got a head start on acclimating to the game at the pro level.

“In college sometimes you’ve got four or five seconds to make a play and here you’ve got two or three. You have less time, so you have to know what you want to do with the puck before you get it,” Chiasson said. “Here you have to stick to the system. In the neutral zone you’ve got to stick to your guy and in the defensive zone, too.”

“It’s been an eye-opening experience for him . This is all new to him,” said White. “We’re talking about the game, the paychecks, so everything is kind of new to him. But all in all, he’s moving along well.”

Chiasson, a Quebec native, played three seasons at Boston University. This past season, as a junior, he had 46 points (15 goals, 31 assists) in 38 games, leading the Terriers in both points and assists. He got off to a slow start but had points in 18 of his final 22 games, registering 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists) during that stretch.

“I had an OK first semester and then with everything that happened in school I stepped up after Christmas and had a solid second semester,” he said. “It was a great year in that we made it to the tournament. We had a good team, good young guys and good chemistry. I was just trying to be a leader in my third year and tried to lead by example.”

There were some tough times in the Boston University hockey program this season due to off ice issues. Two of Chiasson’s teammates were arrested for sexual assault during the season.

“They are not the things you want to happen and it’s sad,” Chiasson said. “They are still part of my life, these guys I grew up with in college and played with for three years. Hopefully everything works out, but it was hard as a team. We had to look forward and that’s what we did as a team. We needed guys to step up and it worked out pretty good.”

Boston University made it to the NCAA West Region Semifinals, where it lost to Minnesota. A few days later, Chiasson had a contract with Dallas and joined Texas to embark on his pro career. He’s expected to play with Texas next season, but he’s hoping to make an impression when he attends his first pro training camp in September.

“Going in you’ve got to be confident. Everyone is battling for a spot. It doesn’t matter if you are down here or up there,” Chiasson said. “Right now it’s good for me that I am getting my feet wet and seeing what it’s like. I know I can play in this league, the AHL. I am confident in myself. I know I have some stuff to work on this summer, but I am going in there with full confidence, give 100 percent and see what happens.”
The Dallas Stars and Texas Stars announced this morning that Texas Stars head coach Jeff Pyle and assistant coach Jeff Truitt have been relieved of their duties.

Texas finished last in the AHL's Western Conference and 29th in a 30 team league with a 31-40-5 record this season. The team missed the playoffs for the first time in its three year existence.

"These are difficult decisions," said Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. "We fell short of where we thought the bar needed to be this year with respect to our minor league team. I think looking ahead we realize the importance of the situation here moving forward, especially with all those kids we have coming in to that team. We just felt it was the right decision for our organization moving forward."

Several of Dallas' top prospects will play in Texas next season, including goaltender Jack Campbell, defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, defenseman Patrik Nemeth, forward Alex Chiasson and forward Austin Smith. Campbell, Chiasson and Smith played there the final few weeks of this season.

Pyle and Truitt took over the Texas Stars last summer after head coach Glen Gulutzan and assistant Paul Jerrard, who had guided Texas to the playoffs in the team's first two seasons, were promoted to the Dallas Stars' coaching staff.

Nieuwendyk said the Stars are in no rush to find a replacement.

"We'll let the dust settle a bit and we'll have plenty of time to go through the [search process]," Nieuwendyk said.

Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said he thinks forward Reilly Smith can help the team now, and that’s why the the 20-year-old is being added to the roster for the final part of the regular season.

The Stars signed Smith, who just completed his junior year at Miami University, to a three-year entry-level contract Sunday. He’ll join the team on its current road trip.

“I think he’s a player that can help our hockey club,” Nieuwendyk said of Smith, a third round pick (69th overall) in 2009. “I can look back on my own experience (coming out of Cornell), when I joined the Calgary Flames for the last nine games of the season. It was a very valuable experience for me. It was one of the important things in my career. I have a past history with that. That has a lot to do with it.

“He’s had a phenomenal year in college. He has some elements of skill and goal scoring ability. I think it is a low-risk move on our part.”

Smith ranked second in the nation in goal scoring this seasoning, tallying 30 in 39 games. He led the nation in game-winners with eight and was tied for ninth with nine power play goals.

When Smith, who turns 21 on April 1, gets into the lineup is still up in the air.

“He’ll practice with us the next few days. We have immigration issues to deal with and then we’ll see,” Nieuwendyk said.

As to where Smith might fit in the lineup, Nieuwendyk wasn’t ready to say.

“I can’t make a guess at this point,” he said.

Prospect Alex Chiasson expected to head to Texas Stars

Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said prospect Alex Chiasson, the team’s second round pick (38th overall) in 2009, is expected to join the Texas Stars this week. Chiasson just wrapped up his junior season at Boston University, where he had a team-high 46 points (15 goals, 31 assists) in 38 games.

Jack Campbell, Austin Smith join Texas Stars

The Texas Stars got a couple of Dallas’ top prospects for the remainder of the regular season, and more could be on the way.

Goalie Jack Campbell, Dallas’ first round pick (11th overall) in 2010, wrapped up his junior career and was assigned to Texas by the Dallas Stars on Monday.

Forward Austin Smith, Dallas’ fifth round pick (128th overall) in 2007, wrapped up his collegiate career at Colgate over the weekend. Smith, college hockey’s leading goal scorer this season, signed an amateur tryout contract with Texas.

Both Smith and Campbell are with the team now and are expected to see action with Texas soon.

“We expect two more blue chip guys coming in potentially after the weekend, depending on how their teams do this weekend,” Texas Stars GM Scott White told ESPN 104.9 in Austin on Wednesday.

White didn’t mention those two players by name, but he could be talking about forwards RW Alex Chiasson (2nd round/2009) and RW Reilly Smith (3rd round/2009). Both players are involved in the NCAA tournament this weekend.

The past week

The Texas went 0-3-0-0 over the past week. Texas is 27-33-2-2 on the season and is 15th in the AHL’s Western Conference, 13 points out of the final playoff spot.

Texas lost 4-3 to Oklahoma City Friday at Cedar Park Center. The Stars blew 2-0 and 3-2 leads in the game. Matt Fraser and Brenden Dillon were among the goal scorers for Texas. Tyler Beskorowany made 32 saves.

After the game, Texas coach Jeff Pyle was blunt about where his team stood.

“We don’t deserve the playoffs, we really, truly don’t,” Pyle said. “We came out in the first and got a 2-0 lead by being patient. In the second period it was still 2-0 and (Travis) Morin turns that puck over. That can’t happen. That’s embarrassing. A leader like that, with a 2-0 lead, you’ve got to take care of the puck and show leadership, and we get none of that. Then we retaliate on a penalty and give them a power play – bad call or not it doesn’t matter. We shouldn’t be there. So, we let them back in the game. Then 3-3 and we deflect a puck blind through the middle of the ice.

“We don’t deserve the playoffs. We don’t do things that are conducive to playoff hockey. We’re not committed to playing playoff hockey. We’re not there. There’s a reason we’re in the situation were in.”

On Saturday, Texas lost 4-3 again to Oklahoma City at Cedar Park Center. The Stars were down 3- 1after the first period and could never catch up. Colton Sceviour and Francis Wathier scored for Texas. Andrew Raycroft made 24 saves.

The Stars dropped their fifth straight game, falling 5-2 to Abbotsford on Monday. Sceviour scored both goals for Texas. Beskorowany made 26 saves. Texas ended it is seven-game homestand with a 2-5-0-0 record.
