FRISCO -- The Dallas Stars held the 2011 Alumni Classic in Frisco Sunday night and among the current players suiting up were forward Tomas Vincour and defenseman Philip Larsen.

The two were still around Sunday after making it through the latest round of roster cuts as the Stars move closer to their opening night roster.

“It’s nice to be still here,” said Vincour. “I knew all I could do is work hard, play hockey and that’s what I did.”

Excluding forward Scott Glennie, who is injured and will be assigned to the AHL once he is cleared to play – the Stars are down to 24 players, one over the maximum of 23.

The Stars have 14 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goaltenders on the roster. If they decide to carry 14 forwards, Vincour is in a pretty good spot.

Most likely the Stars would carry seven defensemen, so there would need to be another defenseman moved off the roster. That could end up being Larsen, but that didn’t curb his enthusiasm for making this latest cut.

“You don’t know what is going to happen, but it is a really nice feeling to be here,” said Larsen. “You want to be here and you’re feeling more and more part of the team. Then again, you never know. But it is always like that.”

The Stars will need to be down to 23 players by the season opener.

2011 Alumni Classic

The Stars staged the 2011 Alumni Classic for season ticket holders at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Frisco Sunday night. The game featured current Stars and former Stars mixed together on two squads – Team White and Team Black.

Team White rallied to win the game 11-9. Mike Modano’s empty net goal sealed the win for the Team White.

Among the top goal scorers in the game were Mike Ribeiro (3), Jake Dowell (2) and Verbeek (2).

The game opened with Modano centering Jere Lehtinen and Brett Hull on one side and Joe Nieuwendyk centering Brenden Morrow and Pat Verbeek on the other.

Goaltenders from the Texas Tornado handled the netminding, so Kari Lehtonen coached Team White and Andrew Raycroft was the coach of Team Black. Former Stars goaltender Ed Belfour, who took part in the game, played forward and some defense, where he was paired at times with former teammate Richard Matvichuk.

The game also featured a shootout challenge. Among the better goals, Nieuwendyk with a nifty backhand to forehand move, Mike Keane scoring off a slap shot and Krys Barch with a slick move to freeze the goaltender and slip the puck into the net.

Stars forwards Jamie Benn and Adam Burish, who are out with groin injuries, did not participate in the game. Both players watched the game from the stands.
