ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun has some trade deadline items related to the Dallas Stars. GM Joe Nieuwendyk told LeBrun time will tell how the Stars approach the trade deadline. Obviously, how the Stars do over next few weeks will dictate the plan moving forward.

"I think it’s a little early yet," Nieuwendyk said. "I think all these teams will have a better idea in a few weeks depending on how things shake out. There’s a lot of tire-kicking going on, but we’ll have to see how things work out."

LeBrun also has a brief item on Stars defenseman Nicklas Grossman, who will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Grossman could spark interest if the Stars don't sign him to an extension prior to the deadline, which is Feb. 27. You can read the latest from LeBrun here.

Stars broadcast team wins Lone Star Emmy

The Dallas Stars broadcast team won a Lone Star Emmy for its coverage of last season's opening game, when Mike Modano returned to Dallas as a member of the Detroit Red Wings.

Here's an excerpt from the Fox Sports Southwest release:
For the ninth consecutive year since the inception of the statewide award, FOX Sports Southwest took home the Emmy for Best Live Sports Event for the 2010 Dallas Stars home opener against the Detroit Red Wings.

The game featured the much-anticipated return to Dallas of Mike Modano, the face of the Stars’ franchise for 20 years, who was playing one final season for the Stars’ biggest rival, the Detroit Red Wings. Producer Jason Walsh and director Mark Vittorio balanced the emotional storyline of Modano’s first game back on Dallas ice in a Red Wings jersey by reliving the Stars’ past, while looking ahead to the team’s future.

It marked the third time a FOX Sports Southwest Stars game won an Emmy for Best Live Sports Event, joining Game 6 of the 2008 NHL Western Conference Semifinal series quadruple overtime victory over the San Jose Sharks, and Game 5 of the 2003 Stars-Edmonton Oilers Western Conference quarterfinals.
If you are a DirecTV subscriber and have been concerned about missing Dallas Stars games because of the satellite operator’s dispute with Fox, which included Fox Sports Southwest, you can stop worrying.

The two sides announced this evening that they have reached an agreement that will keep the Fox networks, including FSSW, on DirecTV.

This was the statement from DirecTV:
We have reached an agreement with Fox Networks to continue carrying all Fox Networks (including FX, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, SPEED, FUEL TV, FOX Soccer, FOX Soccer Plus and FOX Deportes), Fox’s regional sports networks, Fox Broadcasting (FOX), the FOX local stations, Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. We know the past ten days have been challenging, but we’re pleased that both sides could eventually come together to ensure our viewers continue to enjoy Fox programming.

Modano's return helps Stars score on TV

The Dallas Stars not only won on the ice Thursday night, they scored a victory of sorts in the TV ratings as well. Mike Modano's return helped propel the team to its highest TV ratings on FOX Sports Southwest in more than six years. Here's the release sent out by FS SW this afternoon:
Mike Modano’s return to Dallas Thursday night produced the highest-rated Dallas Stars telecast on FOX Sports Southwest in over six years, according to Nielsen Media Research. The game against Modano’s new Detroit Red Wings team averaged a 1.7 Nielsen household rating in Dallas-Fort Worth, the best mark for a regular-season Stars telecast on FOX Sports Southwest since a 2.4 on April 2, 2004 against the Minnesota Wild.

An average of 44,630 homes in Dallas-Fort Worth tuned in to watch the former Stars standout play his first game in Dallas wearing a visitor’s sweater. The game was the night’s No. 1-rated cable TV program in Dallas-Fort Worth, beating ESPN’s West Virginia-South Florida college football telecast that averaged a 1.6 rating.
Another season, another TV contract dispute is going to make watching hockey difficult for some people. This time it's a fees flap between Dish Network and Fox.

Right now, the dispute has led to Fox's regional sports networks, including Fox Sports Southwest, disappearing from Dish Network. For Stars fans with that's a big deal because 62 of the team's games are on FSSW, including Friday's season opener at New Jersey.

The Dallas Stars put out an update on the situation late last night and you can read it here.
