Stars outlook: Defensemen

September, 6, 2011
9/06/11
11:16
PM CT
The Dallas Stars defense has been considered a weak link by many over the last couple of years, but GM Joe Nieuwendyk conducted a significant overhaul of the blue line by bringing in three new defenseman over the last six-and-a-half months.

His first move was the acquisition of Alex Goligoski from Pittsburgh for left wing James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen prior to last season’s trade deadline. Goligoski gave the Stars a skilled, puck moving defenseman and he didn’t disappoint. In 23 games with the Stars last season he registered 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) while averaging 26:04 of ice time.

“I think that’s been a focus for us is to improve our defense. Going back to the Goligoski trade, I think that was a very important trade for us,” said Nieuwendyk. “He’s going to take – if he didn’t already have a prominent role – he’s certainly going to take one this year. But now we’ve added some size.”

That size came via free agency. One addition was veteran Sheldon Souray (6-4, 233 pounds), who played in the AHL last season and has been plagued by injuries the last couple seasons. Some might see it as a risky move, but Nieuwendyk doesn’t

“Souray to me is not a gamble. I think we are getting a real motivated player,” Nieuwendyk said. “He’s an NHL player and plays with that edge that I like and I think that maybe we’ve lacked a little bit on our backend. He’s not fun to play against.

“On the other side, if he can develop some chemistry with (Mike) Ribeiro or Goligoski on that power play, we’ll have a weapon back there that we haven’t had for a few years either.”

The other addition was Adam Pardy (6-2, 220 pounds). He was slowed by injury last season, but the Stars think there is a lot of upside to the former Calgary Flame.

“Adam Pardy is a guy a lot people won’t know a lot about. I know even before my time in Dallas, even with the organizations I had been with, there was a lot of talk about keeping an eye on this kid because he was an up and comer,” Nieuwendyk said. “We think his mobility and his size are going to be a big asset for us.”

One of the goals this season is for the Stars defense to play a harder, more physical game and Nieuwendyk said some of the offseason moves will pave the way guys Nicklas Grossman and Mark Fistric to do just that.

“I think with the addition of two more big bodies back there with Souray and Pardy and the additions of big bodies up front with Eric Godard and Jake Dowell, and Krys Barch, we’ve toughened up our team at both ends,” said Nieuwendyk. “And I think that’s going to allow guys like Fistric and Grossman to really play physical and feel comfortable doing it.”

With Goligoski, Stephane Robidas and Trevor Daley the Stars also have a strong group of mobile, puck moving defensemen. Robidas has been a rock on the Dallas blue line over the years. Although Daley will be 28 at the start of the season and playing in his seventh full NHL season, Nieuwendyk said there is still some untapped potential.

“He just has too many good tools to not be able to do more. I think this is going to be a big year for him,”
Nieuwendyk said. “Our defense is shaping up sort of the way I would like to see it in today’s NHL. You look at Chicago’s success and Detroit’s success over the years and you have defenseman that can move the puck and handle the puck and make plays. We’re getting that way with Goligoski and Robidas and Trevor is an important part of that. I think he is going to take a big step this year.”

With the changes in personnel – like at the forward position – there will be some work to be done on how the pieces fit together. Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan said training camp and the preseason will be a time to try some different pairings.

“I know that Robi and Souray have played together in Montreal. Robi and Gross have played good together here. Who is a great complement for Goose and Dales as both are skating, puck moving guys?” Gulutzan said. “I think that will be mixed and matched a little bit too because you just don’t know what clicks. I’m sure the defensemen won’t know. The defensemen losing their partners won’t know exactly. With (Jeff) Woywitka not here with Dales, I am sure Dales is ready to try something new.”

Gulutzan also expects a competitive camp with the Stars having seven NHL defenseman under one-way contracts.

“Who is the clear cut seventh? I don’t think we have one, which is great for depth,” Gulutzan said. “There’s going to be some inner competition there for guys to elevate their games.”

Pushing for NHL time

Gulutzan said the Stars believe they have some good depth below those top seven defensemen. Veteran Brad Lukowich has 658 NHL games under his belt. Highly regarded prospect Philip Larsen has seen NHL duty each of the last two seasons. AHL veteran Maxime Fortunus played eight games for Dallas in 2009-10. And Brenden Dillon, a free agent signing out of Seattle of the WHL, was impressive with Texas of the AHL last season and is another highly regarded prospect.

“There are those four guy and outside of Lukowich, who is going to anchor that ship down in Austin, those three guys – Fortunus, Dillon and Larsen – are coming in to make a statement to stay here,” said Gulutzan. “We feel in our organization we have pretty good depth.”

Stars prospect Hubert Labrie a battler

Dallas Stars defense prospect Hubert Labrie will get a shot to turn pro and play for the Texas Stars this coming season. And you can bet he’ll battle hard for the spot.

Labrie, whom the Stars signed as a free agent in 2009, is a competitor. It was on display at the team’s recent development camp in McKinney, where he went toe-to-toe in some great puck battles with fellow prospect Jamie Oleksiak, who had eight inches and about 50 pounds on him.

It was on display this past season, where Labrie, the captain of the Gatineau Olympiques, missed almost the entire season due to knee surgery, returned for the final nine games and then helped lead his team to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League championship series while playing through more injuries.

“I blocked a shot in the first game of the playoffs, so I played with a hand injury during the playoffs,” Labrie said. “That’s part of the game. That’s hockey.”

The hand was broken. He played through rib and hip injuries too. He didn’t miss a playoff game and finished with 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) and a league-high plus-17 rating in 24 games.

“He missed almost the entire season, but [our scouts] say he played lights out in the playoffs,”
said Les Jackson, Stars Director of Scouting and Player Development.

The knock on Labrie has always been his size. He’s listed at 5-11, 190 pounds. But throughout his junior career he’s always gotten the job done as an excellent defensive defenseman who usually goes up against the opponent’s top players. He’s an excellent one-on-one defender, he hits and he is highly competitive.

Ask him about his style of play and he’s pretty matter of fact.

“In one word? A warrior,” he said.

And his role model is a guy Dallas Stars fans know well.

“Stephane Robidas is a good example for me,” Labrie said. “I play the same style of hockey game. He’s a good image.”

Labrie will get a shot to earn a spot with the Texas Stars next season, although he is still eligible to play one more year of junior hockey.

“We’ll give him an opportunity,” said Jackson. “If he looks like he is ready to play in Austin for sure we’ll keep him there. “

Labrie will get a chance to make an impression when he plays for the Stars at the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan and then it is on to training camp in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

“I have to work hard during the summer,” Labrie said. “I have to be ready for the next camp in September and we’ll see what happens.”
Prospects who attended the week-long Dallas Stars development camp packed up and headed home Thursday, but the team hopes the players took a lot of information with them.

“It’s education,” said Jackson. “For the first year players it’s orientation, get to know a little bit about our coaching staff and our styles. For other guys, it’s follow up. For a number of guys, they’ve been here. It’s finding out where they are at in their development as far as strength and conditioning. The on-ice stuff is tremendous. It’s all teaching details of the skill. We’ve been able to touch a lot of areas of the game to help them advance.”

Areas that players can continue to work on as they work out over the summer to prepare for training camp, whether it is with the Stars or somewhere else. There were off-ice workouts and training guidance. And of there was a lot of work on the ice.

“There are drills we can do over the summer to get better,” said Stars defense prospect Hubert Labrie. “Work on moving your feet and keeping your head up when you have the puck.”

A lot of the drills took the players outside their comfort zone, and had them work on areas that weren’t exactly their strengths. This was forward Matt Fraser’s first time at Dallas’ camp, but he’s been to a camp with the Vancouver Canucks before and knows the work pays dividends.

“I’ve been telling a lot of management that I went to Vancouver’s camp last year and it’s amazing to see the difference this year,” said Fraser, who signed with the Stars as a free agent last fall. “A lot of this is working on your stickhandling, your skills and your shooting and really shows you the areas you need to improve on and areas that you do well. If you want to play in the NHL, you’ve got to improve every day. Some drills take you out of your comfort zone, but that’s just part of it.”

The players are tested in different areas. The word is that defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, the Stars’ first round pick (14th overall) in this summer’s draft, was among the most efficient skaters at the camp. Prospects also get feedback from GM Joe Nieuwendyk and others on the Stars’ staff.

“Keep working on your quick feet and keep working on your hands. Little things that are going to make a difference in the long run,” said forward Alex Chiasson, a second round pick (38th overall) in 2009 and a development camp veteran. “I am a big guy and if I make it to the NHL I am going to be a guy that is working down low, so just the little things that are going to help me in college and transfer to the bigger game later.”

For a player like forward Brett Ritchie, the team’s second round pick (44th overall) in this summer’s draft, it also was an opportunity to experience a professional level camp.

“It’s a lot different than what you find in a junior camp or the OHL. These guys are a so much closer to playing pro and some of them are playing pro in the AHL. The caliber is so much higher,” Ritchie said. “You see how hard these guys work, especially the guys that are playing pro right now. Playing in these high tempo drills, you are going to try to take that speed, that tempo back to your junior team and hopefully get better quicker.”

Camp a great experience for Richardson’s Adriano Mungioli

The development camp also featured several players that are not in the Dallas system. Four of them were kids born in the Dallas area, including Adriano Mungioli.

“It’s amazing, especially since it’s the Dallas Stars camp. It’s my hometown. It’s my dream to play here,” said Mungioli. “It’s awesome to see all the guys that are up and coming in the organization.”

Mungioli, an 18-year-old Richardson native, grew up a Stars fan and played with the Highland Park Scots program before moving to Canada at age 14 to further his career. He spent time at the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia and two years at the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Penticton, British Columbia.

Last season he played Junior B hockey with the Penticton Lakers of the KIJHL. Next season he is hoping to land a spot with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL, and after that maybe college hockey. The word is he’s on the radar of Cornell, Yale or Princeton.

The Dallas camp was a good measuring stick for the skilled, crafty Mungioli, who is listed at 5-9, 175 pounds, and models his style of play on Stars center Mike Ribeiro.

“I am a younger guy here, so it’s a chance to play against some older, better guys, and develop,” he said. “It’s good.”

And it’s a good opportunity to work on his skills. Like the other prospects, it was time to take a trip outside his comfort zone in some of the drills.

“That’s what this whole camp’s theme is – get outside your comfort zone, practice at the things you aren’t strong at so you can get better,” Mungioli said.

While the Dallas camp was a new experience for Mungioli, some of the faces were familiar. He’s spent time working out with the Stars strength and conditioning coach J.J. McQueen.

“He’s tough,” Mungioli said. “He puts you through a lot of stuff and sometimes he’ll have you crawling on your hands and knees after workouts, but it is good.”

The camp was a good as well for the kid who grew up a Stars fan and got a chance to play with some of the team’s top prospects and in front of the team’s management and coaching staff.

“I’ve loved the Stars. We’ve had season tickets. I used to watch them all the time,” Mungioli said. “It’s awesome to actually be here and play with them. It’s actually pretty surreal.”

Some notes from development camp in McKinney today.

*Players split into two groups again today and while one worked out off the ice in Frisco, the other skated in McKinney. They switched facilities and routines after the lunch break. They’ll do the same tomorrow.

*Forward Scott Glennie didn’t skate today. The Stars said he has a sore knee. Not sure of his status for tomorrow.

*The Hockey News reported today that defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, the Stars first round pick (14th overall) in this summer’s draft, will tryout out for Canada’s World Junior team, not Team USA. There’s been no official word from anyone on this. Media availability was over by the time I saw the report, so I’ll try to ask Oleksiak tomorrow. Oleksiak is currently on the roster for Team USA’s Evaluation camp, but the word is that Canada has been recruiting him. Oleksiak has dual citizenship, so he could play for either team. He played for the U.S. at the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, but he’s not officially committed to one country or the other until he plays at an IIHF sanctioned tournament, and the Hlinka doesn’t qualify. The World Juniors does, so it’s a big decision.

*The player who stood out in my eyes at camp today was defenseman Hubert Labrie, a free agent signing back in 2009. He is a battler. Showed some great determination, resolve and smarts in puck battles this afternoon, including a few with a much larger Oleksiak. Labrie missed most of this season due to a knee injury, but returned late in the season and was outstanding in helping Gatineau make it to the QMJHL finals.

*A reminder, the Stars are holding a free autograph session with the prospects at the development camp on Wednesday. Here’s the note from the Stars:
The Dallas Stars will hold a free public autograph session on Wednesday at 5 pm at the McKinney Dr Pepper StarCenter, located off Alma Road north of 121, just behind the Michael Johnson Performance center. All 38 players participating in the Stars Development Camp will be at the autograph session.

*And here’s some video – about 12 minutes worth – of the end of today’s session. There’s plenty of good action, including some of Labrie’s work. He’s #54. By the way, videos from the camp are on my YouTube channel, which is here.

Since I am promoting the YouTube channel, I’ll plug my seldom-plugged Twitter account (@andrewsdsp) and Facebook page.
