About the Stars

It’s a new era for the Dallas Stars. Mike Modano, the face of the franchise, is gone. So is long time starting goaltender Marty Turco. There’s no Jere Lehtinen either.

“Those guys were my friends and they were here a long time, but we’ve gotten younger and you get that youthful excitement and energy,” said captain Brenden Morrow. “The game has changed; it’s a lot faster paced and more skilled. We believe our young guys possess that and we want to get them the minutes.”

Kari Lehtonen, who will start in goal Friday, takes over as the team’s new No. 1 goaltender this season as the Stars try to get back into the playoffs after missing the postseason the last two years.

Injuries: LW Brenden Morrow (back) and LW Tom Wandell (shoulder) are expected to play.

About the Devils

The Devils have undergone some changes as well. John MacLean will take over behind the bench and the Devils, who feature Ilya Kovalchuk, Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Patrik Elias and Jason Arnott up front, are expected to be more offensive than in past years.

“We’re not going to get away from our defense, but we do have some exciting players,” MacLean told WFAN radio. “We’re excited about our offense and our lines … but to win a championship you have to take care of your own end and that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Martin Brodeur will start in goal for the Devils, who have made the playoffs 13 straight seasons but have been knocked out in the first round each of the last three years.

Due to cap issues, the Devils will go with the minimum 20-man roster to start the season.

Injuries: D Bryce Salvador (concussion) and D Anssi Salmela (knee) are both on LTIR.

NHL announces Vezina Trophy finalists

April, 19, 2010
Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes and Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres are the three finalists for the 2009-10 Vezina Trophy, which is awarded “to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at his position,” the National Hockey League announced Monday. The winner will be announced Wednesday, June 23.

Not the way to start second half

January, 5, 2010

The Stars went up to New Jersey to begin the second half of their NHL season and fell 4-0 to the Devils.

New Jersey scored near the end of the first period (winning a puck battle and taking advantage of a mistake in the Dallas zone) and things didn't get much better in the second period.

Dallas started Alex Auld and he didn't really have it. It's not easy facing Martin Brodeur, either. And he was on his game in getting the shutout.

The Stars will get a chance to bounce back quickly with a game in New York against the Rangers on Wednesday. Join us for a live in-game chat as we all watch the game together on TV and talk about it. It's a fun way to watch a game!

Which goalie should start when?

January, 5, 2010

Stars coach Marc Crawford will likely start Marty Turco one game and Alex Auld the other in this two-game stretch against New Jersey and the Rangers.

So which goalie should start tonight against the Devils?

I still say you start your No. 1 goalie against Martin Brodeur. So I play Turco tonight and Auld tomorrow. But that's just me.

What woud you do?
