*The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Brad Lukowich to a onne-year, two-way deal. The 34-year-old spent most of last season with the Texas Stars of the AHL, registering 27 points (4 goals, 23 assists) in 67 games. He played five games with Dallas, going scoreless.
*The Stars also declined to extend qualifying offers to two restricted free agents who spent last season in the minors. They are forward Sean Backman, who signed with the team as a free agent out of Yale. Backman had 7 goals and 16 assists in 67 games with Texas.
The other player is defenseman Guillaume Monast, who signed as a free agent out of juniors in 2008. He spent most of last season with Idaho of the ECHL, where he had 8 points (1 goal, 7 assists) in 48 games. He had one assist in 14 games with Texas.
Both Monast and Backman become unrestricted free agents.
*The Stars made the hiring of Paul Jerrard as assistant coach official today. Jerrard spent the last two season as new head coach Glen Gulutzan’s assistant with the Texas Stars of the AHL. Here’s the release from the team:
Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has named Paul Jerrard as an assistant coach. He has been affiliated with the Stars for the past six seasons as an assistant coach with the team’s primary development affiliate.
“We are very excited to name Paul Jerrard to our coaching staff,” said Nieuwendyk. “He has great history with our organization, as well as with Glen Gulutzan while they were both coaching at our AHL franchise in Cedar Park. Paul’s professionalism and work ethic will rub off on this organization and our players. He will help the Dallas Stars take the next step in getting back to the playoffs.”
Jerrard, 46, spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach working with Gulutzan and the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. He helped the club reach the AHL Playoffs in both campaigns, including the Stars’ run to the Calder Cup Finals in the franchise’s inaugural season of 2009-10. Jerrard assisted Texas in posting a cumulative 87-56-17 record (.587 points percentage) during the regular season and a 16-14 (.533 winning percentage) record during the playoffs with Texas.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native boasts a decade of coaching experience, including two years as an assistant coach with Pennsylvania's Hershey Bears of the AHL prior to joining the Dallas Stars organization as an assistant with the Iowa Stars (AHL) for three seasons (2005-2008). In 2002-03, Jerrard was responsible for video as the Colorado Avalanche's assistant coach. He also coached for four years at his alma mater, Lake Superior State University. Prior to joining Lake Superior State, Jerrard spent one year as Assistant Coach with Lowell in 1998-99.
Jerrard spent 10 years as a defenseman in professional hockey, having been drafted by the New York Rangers in the ninth round (173rd overall) of the 1983 Entry Draft. He was traded to the Minnesota North Stars in October of 1988 and skated in five games for Minnesota that season. Jerrard played parts of six seasons with Kalamazoo (IHL) and was a member of the 1997 Calder Cup winning Hershey Bears. Jerrard is certified in strength and conditioning (CSCS) and is a member of the National Strength Coaches Association (NSCA).
Paul and his wife Cheryl have two children, Meaghan and Catherine.
