Stars fall to Lightning, 2-1

The Dallas Stars saw their winless streak hit four games (0-3-1) with a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at American Airlines Center Friday night. The Stars have scored just four goals during the slide. The Dallas power play was 0-4 and is now 4-45 (8.8%) over the last 14 games. Tom Wandell scored the lone goal for Dallas. Kari Lehtonen stopped 20 of 22 shots. Teddy Purcell scored both goals for Tampa Bay and Mathieu Garon stopped 27 of 28 shots.

First period

The Tampa Bay Lightning dominated the first period, outshooting the Stars 13-5 and getting several quality shots on net. But Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen came up with some huge saves to keep the Stars close.

He had nice stops on Teddy Purcell and Steven Stamkos with the Lightning on the power play. Later in the period he made two saves on two point blank attempts by Stamkos with just over seven minutes left in the period. He had two more big saves on Stamkos with Tampa Bay on its second power play of the game with just under seven minutes left in the period.

The Lightning finally cashed in on their 13th shot of the period. Martin St. Louis centered the puck from the right boards to a wide open Purcell, who scored from close range with 1:12 left in the period.

Second period

The Stars outshot the Lightning 12-5 in the second period, but couldn’t get a puck past Mathieu Garon and it remained it a 1-0 game through 40 minutes.

The Stars had a couple of power play chances in the period, but got one shot on goal on each and couldn’t cash in.

Later in the period the Stars got a couple odd-man chances, but couldn’t convert.

Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos had a good look at an open side of the net late in the period, but Stars captain Brenden Morrow made a sliding block to deny the chance.

Stars forward Eric Nystrom and Lightning forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie dropped the gloves with 2:18 left in the period.

Garon was shaken up 4:33 into the second period when he was run into by teammate Steven Stamkos. The game was delayed briefly while Garon was checked up by the Lightning trainer. He stayed in the game.

Third period

The Stars tied the game 1:22 into the third period when Loui Eriksson set up Tom Wandell off the rush and the puck went off Wandell’s skate and eventually slipped through Garon.

The Lightning retook the lead a little more than two minutes later with a goal of the rush when Purcell scored off a backhand to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead at the 3:36 mark.

The Stars got their fourth power play of the night midway through the period, but it only lasted 1:22 because Stars forward Vernon Fiddler was called for slashing.

The Stars pulled Lehtonen for the extra attacker in the final minute, but couldn't get the equalizer.
