Rangers offer arbitration to Byrd, Pudge
That means if Byrd or Rodriguez, both Type B free agents, sign with other teams, the Rangers would receive a supplemental first-round pick (between rounds one and two) in the 2010 draft. The players have until 11 p.m. CT Monday to accept or decline the offer.
"We've had dialog with the agents for both guys and have interest in them returning under the right circumstances," general manager Jon Daniels said via e-mail. "At the same time, we understand they have options they're going to look into. We'll continue to stay in touch. Either we have a winning player for 2010 or a draft pick for the future."
Byrd hit .283 with 20 homers and 89 RBIs for the Rangers in 2009. He has expressed a desire to stay with the club, but is looking for a multi-year deal. Rodriguez, who came to the Rangers from Houston in an August trade, started 25 games at catcher and hit .245 with two homers and 13 RBIs for Texas.
Rodriguez gives the Rangers some insurance at catcher. Jarrod Saltalamacchia just started winter ball in the Dominican Republic as he tries to show that he's healthy following shoulder surgery. Taylor Teagarden will also come to spring training in the mix for a catching job.
