I've always been a Joaquin Benoit fan. He's a good guy and, at times, certainly showed some great stuff. It was disappointing that after such a solid 2007 season (he was named Rangers' pitcher of the year by the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the BBWAA that year). He was 7-4 with a 2.85 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 82 innings. It helped him get a new contract (2 years, $6 million).
But a shoulder injury slowed him in 2008 and he didn't play in 2009. The Tampa Bay Rays are taking a chance on him for $750,000 if he makes the roster. He could earn another $500,000 in bonuses, according to this story in the St. Petersburg Times.
Let's hope Benoit bounces back with a great season.
