Thoughts on Moreland, Harrison and more

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Rangers defeated the Padres, 6-2, on Friday. A few random thoughts:

* LHP Matt Harrison said he wasn't thrilled with his performance, but I thought it was pretty good. He worked plenty on his cutter and fastball command and also managed to work in some curveballs in his third and final innings. (He also threw some changeups in the first few innings).

"Overall, I was behind a lot of guys, not a lot of first-pitch strikes," Harrison said. "I was able to come back and execute my pitches when I needed to and make the batter put the ball in play."

Harrison said he wants to work on the curve in the bullpen and get it more down in the zone. But he's happy where he is overall this spring.

* CF Julio Borbon is reading balls well and covering ground with confidence in center. Borbon said his main focus this spring is defense and he's seeing results. I'll have more in the next few days on Borbon and what exactly he's working on. But he had a nice game Friday (including a drag bunt for a hit too).

* The ball makes a different sound when it comes off Mitch Moreland's bat. It's tough to describe, but he really squares the ball when he hits. He was 2-for-2 on Friday and both hits were hard. The guy has to be turning some heads out here. I know he's turning heads in the crowd when they hear that noise. He's now 7-for-17 (.412) this spring.

* 1B Chris Davis' streak ended at eight consecutive hits. He's been impressive so far this spring and says he's comfortable and not thinking too much at the plate. More from Davis in the next few blog posts.

* RHP Tommy Hunter gave up a leadoff double and that runner scored. But he settled down and got through his three innings. Hunter was working on throwing his changeup and got two batters to swing and miss and another to put the ball in play for an out. His plan is to continue to make it a pitch that he can throw in key situations to get outs.

* Vladimir Guerrero had two four-pitch walks in the game, one with the bases loaded. Too much is made of Guerrero's lack of patience. As manager Ron Washington said, he hits so many of those pitches out of the zone that it's tough to argue with it. But on Friday, he didn't swing at pitches out of the zone and drew walks because of it. More on that tomorrow.
