Surprise Six: Sunday spring recap
1. Derek Holland is back in the thick of the No. 5 starter spot competition. His slider was particularly good and he threw strikes. Holland needed just 28 pitches to get through three innings and said that he knew he had some ground to gain on the other pitchers. It's great for the Rangers that this competition is going to be about who wins the job, not who loses it.
2. Will we see the Josh Hamilton that was closer to 2008? We might if his spring training is any indication. Hamilton had a homer in today's game in Surprise (I didn't see it because I was in Glendale) and continues to hit the ball well when he's healthy. Hamilton has hit safely and scored a run in all five "A" games he's played, batting .471 (8-for-17) with six runs, two doubles, a triple, a homer and two RBIs.
3. General manager Jon Daniels will meet with his staff on Monday morning in Surprise to evaluate how spring training has gone and begin to make some cuts. They'll discuss how the No. 5 competition is going and how to approach things. But at some point (it won't be tomorrow), they'll have to dwindle the competitors down simply because there aren't enough innings to get everyone ready. If you ask me, the leading candidates remain (in alphabetical order) Matt Harrison, Derek Holland, Brandon McCarthy and C.J. Wilson. No reason to change any of those plans now. Let them make their next outings and start to pitch the second time through the lineup. We'll see what Daniels has to say tomorrow. (I wouldn't be surprised if Neftali Feliz ends up focusing more on relief duties, but that's pure speculation at this point.)
4. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia played for the first time since a "B" game on March 8. And he said he felt good. He made a nice throw to second base (Elvis Andrus couldn't quite handle it and Saltalamacchia was charged with an error) and hit a double. I like Saltalamacchia's demeanor this spring. I think he's focused on getting this job and improving.
5. I can see why Mitch Moreland has caught the eye of many in the organization. He can definitely swing a bat. But he also showed he has an arm on Sunday with a rifle from right field to home plate to gun down a runner. I'll have to make sure I see some more of Moreland in the minors this season. No doubt, he's got a bright future.
6. Plenty of injury updates today on several guys, so check that out here. Also, the Rangers have had some contact with Khalil Greene, but he's not focused on returning to baseball yet.
