SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Another spring training day has ended. Let's take a look at six issues from Friday in Surprise.

1. RHP Tommy Hunter has a left oblique strain. The reality is that he's not likely to start the season, opening up another spot in the rotation. If I were betting on it, I'd have C.J. Wilson and Matt Harrison penciled in. I think Wilson has earned a spot and the club seems confident that it has enough late-inning arms to handle things should he get a spot. Derek Holland is still in the mix and has a chance to make more of a case on Saturday. BTW, FanGraphs took a look at the possibility of Wilson as a starter.

2. RHP Brandon McCarthy didn't have his best stuff on Friday. And it's making this race for the two spots look like it's really between Wilson, Harrison and Holland. The club still has Neftali Feliz stretched out, but I think he will probably end up in the bullpen.

3. DH Vladimir Guerrero got a chance to play in right field on Friday. He didn't get to make a play. "At least he got to run around and do more than just hit and sit down," Washington said. Guerrero said he's not worried about results and is pleased with how his swing is progressing this spring.

4. The Rangers sent first baseman possibilities Mitch Moreland, Justin Smoak and Chad Tracy to minor league camp. Chris Davis has had a big spring and has erased any doubts about whether he could pick up where he left off in late 2009. Matt Brown and Max Ramirez remain in camp and are getting time at first base. Ramirez was at first in relief of Davis on Friday and made a nice dig on a throw to first. Ramirez's advantage is that he could act as a third catcher.

5. A few things for you to read/watch. Darren O'Day will be doing a diary with us for the season (about once a week or so). Here is first entry. Also, check out our live in-game chat from Friday's game.

6. The NCAA tournament is on the minds of players and coaches and many of them have rooting interest in teams in the Big Dance. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, a Cornell grad, was pleased that his team pulled of the upset of Temple on Friday. "I didn't watch the game because I already knew the outcome," said Daniels, tongue firmly planted in cheek. Daniels wasn't ready to boldly claim that Cornell would get into the Sweet 16, but he'll be keeping an eye on th egame on Sunday.
