SURPRISE, Ariz. -- As you might expect, the Rangers do have a scout following the Red Sox to take a look at Mike Lowell, according to our ESPNBoston.com buddy Gordon Edes.

The clubs had a deal in place before Lowell failed a physical just after the offseason. Lowell is scheduled to play third base today, which should attract a handful of scouts interested to see how he looks there. He has played some first base this spring training and hit DH.

The Rangers are exploring any and all options, as they should. I'd still think this is a long shot, but we'll see. The word is that Lowell isn't moving particularly well this spring, but that's not unusual. He can still swing the bat and is getting used to playing first base. And he'd be a right-handed bat that could spell Chris Davis at times at first.

The question of his $12 million contract and how much Boston might pay would certainly come up. (They were going to pay $9 million of it before the deal fell through). We'll see if anything starts bubbling there.

Other notes:

* Vladimir Guerrero is scheduled to play the outfield again on Monday as the Giants don't use the DH. It would be the second time this spring that Guerrero has played the outfield. Rangers manager Ron Washington said he didn't want Guerrero sitting around for a few days in a row, especially with the off day on Tuesday. Guerrero is not in today's lineup.

* Washington said he'd like to get David Murphy into around 110 games if the outfield stays healthy. He arrived at that number by going over how many games he'd like each outfielder/DH to play this season (Guerrero at 145-150, Josh Hamilton at 130-135, Nelson Cruz at 130-135 and Julio Borbon at 130). In other words: Murphy will get his at-bats.
