SURPRISE, Ariz. -- ESPN.com's Keith Law put a blog entry up on Thursday that had more to do with the Royals than any other team. But it did include a few Rangers nuggets. Here you go:

* Right-hander Joe Wieland threw for Texas in the same game, working at 86-89 mph with a changeup anywhere from 78-83 and a short, below-average curveball with a short, downward break. Wieland's a strike-thrower with a little deception in his delivery, but he didn't show anything that was likely to miss bats at higher levels of the minors. I don't see a lot of physical projection right now, as he's pretty thick-bodied already.

* I mentioned Texas catcher Jorge Alfaro's arm in Tuesday's post. On Wednesday I got to see him swing the bat, although only twice. He's strong for his age and gets very good extension without much length in the swing. His weight transfer and hip rotation are excellent. It's based on just two swings, and I have no idea what his plate discipline might be like, but there's offensive promise here to go with his defensive skills.
