The Rangers dealt right-handed pitcher Luis Mendoza to Kansas City for cash considerations, freeing up a spot on the 40-man roster. Mendoza was out of options. The Rangers now have 38 players on the 40-man roster (Ben Snyder's move to Frisco freed up another spot), but that doesn't include Omar Beltre and Alexi Ogando.

Mendoza, 26, made just one appearance with the Rangers last season, spending the rest of the year with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was 6-7 with a 4.53 ERA in 25 games (18 of them starts) in OKC. He had a 4.50 ERA in 14 innings of Cactus League games this spring.

The Rangers got Mendoza for RHP Bryan Corey on July 30, 2006. This ends an interesting stay in Texas for Mendoza. At one point, Mendoza was slated to be the club's fifth starter in 2008 until a blister on his right middle finger put him on the disabled list. He ended up making 11 starts that season for Texas, but was never a regular in the rotation.
