Mound matchup: Feldman vs. Scherzer
Feldman (1-1, 4.41 ERA): This will be his fourth start of the season and he's doing so with an extra day of rest (thanks to the off day in Boston). He lost for the first time in 2010 in his last appearance, Saturday in New York, after making the shortest start of his career at 2 1/3 innings. Feldman needed 73 pitches to go that distance, allowing four earned runs. He was the club's Opening Day starter and had quality starts in his first two outings, pitching seven innings in each. He has an 8.82 ERA in 16 1/3 innings pitched against the Tigers (7 career games) and is 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in 8 1/3 innings of starting work against the Tigers in Arlington.
Scherzer (1-1, 2.12 ERA): He's coming off a solid 6-inning performance against the Mariners, where he gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk, needing 86 pitches to do it. Scherzer, 25, has two quality starts in his first three outings, both of them on the road. He has only six career innings against the Rangers (coming in his lone start June 23, 2009 in Detroit), allowing two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
Hitters: Scherzer has faced five current Ranger batters (Michael Young, Nelson Cruz, David Murphy, Chris Davis, Elvis Andrus) and Young, Murphy and Davis each had a hit. Feldman has held Johnny Damon to one hit in six at-bats. Adam Everett (3-for-8) and Carlos Guillen (3-for-6) have hit Feldman well in limited at-bats.
