South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman stopped by the Rangers’ Ballpark in Arlington Thursday to watch two former Gamecocks in action, the Rangers’ first baseman Justin Smoak and Oakland designated hitter Landon Powell.

Hyman caught up with both players before the game to see how they were adjusting to the majors. Smoak told Hyman it’s been a busy start to his Texas career.

“He hadn’t had a whole lot of time off,” Hyman said. “He has an apartment, but he hasn’t had time to see much of the area. He said he’d been in to Dallas one time.”

The Rangers have had only one day off since Smoak was called up on April 23.

Hyman also asked Smoak what the biggest difference between college and pro baseball was.

“He said the parks were so much bigger,” Hyman said.

But mostly they talked about South Carolina baseball and Smoak’s former teammates.

“[Powell] asked me how many South Carolina graduates are in professional baseball now in the major leagues, and there are tons of them in the minor leagues,” Hyman said. “You know the program is just producing them right and left.”
