Rangers draft preview: Names to watch
Asher Wojciechowski, RHP, The Citadel - Wojciechowski is the typical big bodied, two-pitch college bulldog that many project for the middle of a rotation. He doesn’t have a playable changeup yet, but his fastball/slider combo will carry him into the first round. He will be a candidate for the Rangers both at 15 and 22 if he should fall that far.
Brandon Workman, RHP, Texas - Workman has improved over his time in Austin and now possesses one of the coveted weekend starter roles on the best staff in the country (the closer, Chance Ruffin, Bruce Ruffin’s son, should go in the first two rounds, and staff ace Taylor Jungmann is a candidate to go first overall in 2011). His fastball sits in the 90s, and his curveball/cutter combo gives him a full arsenal for a college starter. The 6-5 righty is a top 20 prospect on Baseball America’s board and has been projected to Texas on multiple boards, including MLB.com’s most recent mock.
Kaleb Cowart, RHP, Georgia HS - Cowart might be the most ambitious possibility for Texas. BA ranks him 12th on their board, the highest of any name commonly associated with Texas, and his bonus demand will be well above the recommended slot at #15. He’s a two-way player with first round potential on the mound and at third base, and as is usually the case with such players, he prefers the positional side, and many scouts prefer him as a pitcher. Rumors are that Texas could allow him to give 3B a shot, and former Rangers employee Frankie Pilliere, who still has many connections within the organization, projects them to pop him at 22.
Justin O’Conner, C, Indiana HS - In a game of dicey propositions, high school catchers are about as dicey as you get in the MLB draft. O’Conner, though, fits the newer breed - more athletic with a more versatile tool set. Until last summer he was a third baseman and a pitcher, and pitching could still be on the table, as his arm is graded well into the plus scale. He is a power hitter with questions about his contact ability and approach, so he could fit the high upside model that the Rangers seem to be interested in again this year. MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus each project O’Conner to Texas at #22, and that is very close to where he sits in most publicly available rankings.
Jake Skole, OF, Georgia HS - When I first wrote this list, Skole was nowhere to be found, but the incredibly accurate Jim Callis of BA this morning in his final mock draft projected Skole to Texas at #15, and this sort of late information is typically very on-target. Skole comes from completely off of the first round board as recently as a few days ago and was not even ranked in the top 200 prospects by BA as of a week or so ago. Since he is such a fast riser and since he may play college football even if he signs, his bonus should be a doable proposition for Texas.
Here are a few notes on other possibilities for the Rangers’ picks at 15 and 22:
Alex Wimmers, RHP, Ohio State - Polished changeup artist with full repertoire typically ranked between the Rangers’ picks but now projected to be picked before 15
Kolbrin Vitek, OF, Ball State - Very possible pick for Texas, probably the safest positional alternative as a speedy offensive force
Bryce Brentz, OF, Middle Tennessee State - Another college outfielder commonly associated with the Rangers, particularly at 22, more of a power oriented boom/bust type
Karsten Whitson, RHP, Florida HS - Highly ranked high school righty has quality stuff but is somewhat raw, like many players in this draft his spot is tough to peg
Dylan Covey, RHP, California HS - Strong arm, thick body, nasty slider and could go just about anywhere from 10-30
