Colby Lewis turning into an ace

HOUSTON -- Yes, the Rangers are still looking for more pitching.

But Colby Lewis is making sure the organization doesn't have to worry about him. He threw his first complete game of his major league career in a 5-1 win over the Astros on Saturday night. He threw 101 pitches, striking out nine while allowing just two hits and one earned run for the victory.

Over the last 10 games, Lewis is 3-4 with a 2.87 ERA. During this stretch, he's got 62 strikeouts in 69 innings of work. He has also won his last three starts and attributes a strong outing on against Seattle on June 8 as the beginning of something special for him.

" It was a similar situation with the Seattle start where I was able to throw my breaking ball whenever I needed to, wherever I wanted to," Lewis said. "That's the big difference where I can get that breaking ball over for strikes and keeps them off the slider and the changeup."

The two hits he allowed -- an infield hit by Hunter Pence in the fifth and a hard hit double to right by Michael Bourn -- weren't on bad pitches. Pence hit a slider down and away and Bourn was waiting on his fastball, which surprised Lewis.

So what was the bad pitch of the night?

After Bourn scored on a wild pitch, in the seventh, Lewis struck out Carlos Lee on a 3-2 slider at the letters to end the inning.

"That was the only pitch I felt like I really didn’t hit my spot on," he said, adding that he felt as if he got away with one.

Lewis threw a total of six complete games the last two seasons for Hiroshima of the NPB Central League in Japan. Of course, Lewis was hoping to take the success he had in Japan, 26-17 with 2.82 ERA, to the majors.

"It is nice, but when I look at the last two years, yeah I pitched a complete game here, [but] I want to be able to translate what I've been able to do over there here," Lewis said. "I've been kind of doing what I've been wanting to do."
