Clubhouse notes: Second-half rotation set
Manager Ron Washington said he considered two factors when determining the order of the rotation: rest and matchups.
“We set it up so we can get our best pitchers against the toughest teams,” Washington said.
Lee and Wilson will both start in upcoming series against the Red Sox and Angels. However, if the rotation holds, neither lefty would not start in the July 30-Aug. 1 series against the Angels in Anaheim.
**The Rangers look like a team that could use a few days of rest.
They’ve followed up their phenomenal June by losing seven of 10 games so far in July. Washington believes the grind has gotten to his team.
“This break couldn’t come at a better time for us,” he said. “We need the time down.”
Oddly, however, Washington said he isn’t worried about fatigue in the bullpen.
Yes, we’re talking about the group that leads American League bullpens in innings pitched (273.1). And we’re talking about the bullpen that blew four-run leads twice in the last three days.
“I don’t think fatigue had anything to do with what happened in the first two games against Baltimore,” Washington said. “I just think we didn’t execute our pitches.”
**Lee’s first start in a Texas uniform didn’t exactly go as planned, but there certainly isn’t any buyer’s remorse creeping out of the manager’s office.
“I was impressed,” Washington said. “That was six of the least stressful runs I’ve ever seen somebody give up.”
Lee took the loss by allowing six runs – and three homers – to the Orioles. But he needed only 95 pitches to throw a complete game.
“That’s pounding,” Washington said. “If you ever wanted an example of how to pound the strike zone, you saw it last night.”
**Michael Young isn't an All-Star for the first time since 2003, but he had no problem figuring out what to do with a few days off.
"I'll definitely spend a lot of time with my boys, take them swimming," Young said. "That part will be nice, spend time with my family and give my body a chance to recoup a little bit."
