Ranger Reax: Will Feldman keep spot?

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The big question coming out of Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Angels is whether Scott Feldman will remain in the rotation.

He pitched better Saturday than he has in recent starts. He gave up three runs on seven hits with one walk in 5 1/3 innings. He got the first nine batters he faced but ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth. Manager Ron Washington decided with two on and one out to make a change, despite Feldman having thrown just 80 pitches.

Still, it was improvement.

"I was pleased with what he did," Washington said. "The other guy on the other side did a great job. What can you do?"

The Rangers could alter the rotation next weekend against the Angels, if they choose. Because of the off day, they could pitch Tommy Hunter on Friday and go with Feldman's spot on Saturday. The club must decide if there is a better option out there right now and if they want to make a change. Rich Harden, who makes a Triple-A start Monday, could slip into that spot if he shows consistent command. Matt Harrison, who pitched one inning of relief Saturday, also is a possibility. Derek Holland would not be ready that soon but could become a candidate in August if he continues to progress, starting with a rehab start for Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

The Rangers have time this week to decide. Feldman, for his part, brushed off questions about whether he felt like he was pitching to keep a spot in the rotation. He did admit that he's frustrated by his inconsistency this season. He's winless in his last six starts.

"Tonight would have been a good night to keep throwing up zeros," Feldman said. "Santana was really throwing well for them, and in a game like that I've got to keep going out there and make my pitches."

Feldman said he didn't find his spots on his sinker, which was so reliable last season. He had just four ground ball outs.

"I'd love to get 27 outs on ground balls, but it doesn't always happen," Feldman said. "I was up in the zone too often, and the second and third time through, they made me pay on those."

Feldman was better, but was he good enough to run back out on the mound in Anaheim next weekend?

Other reaction:

* Washington said Bengie Molina will catch Sunday with Tommy Hunter on the mound. Washington was happy with Molina's play on Saturday, which included a nice throw to second off a bunt on a force out and another throw to second to get a would-be stealer. Both plays were in the eighth inning.

"It's nice to have someone back there that runners respect," Washington said. "It's a luxury to make teams that run think a little bit."

* Chris Davis talked about the large crowd. The Rangers had 47,098 on Saturday. It was the club's second consecutive sellout. The last time they did that was May 6-7, 2006, when the Yankees came to town.

"It's fun to go out to a full house and all the noise," Davis said. "We really appreciate that."

Davis had a double and has a three-game hitting streak. Maybe that's a sign of progress for him.

* Michael Young hit homer No. 152, tying Hank Blalock for eighth in the club's all-time list. It was also his third straight game with a home run, the second time in his career he's done that. The last time was Sept. 4-6, 2004.

* Nelson Cruz had a home run on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

* Ian Kinsler had two walks but no hits to snap his 16-game hit streak.

* LHP Darren Oliver's three runs in 2/3 innings were the most he's given up this season and the most since June 4, 2009, against Toronto (as a member of the Angels). His ERA went from 1.29 to 1.90.
