Mound Matchup: Cliff Lee-Francisco Liriano
Lee (10-7, 3.09 ERA): He has allowed four or more earned runs in each of his past three starts, a rare rough patch for the ace in which he's 0-2 with an 8.24 ERA. Lee has allowed four homers, and opponents have batted .314 against him in that span. Lee is 2-4 with a 4.18 ERA in nine starts for Texas this season. On the season, Lee has 151 strikeouts and just 11 walks. That's a major league-best 13.73 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His went just 5 2/3 innings on Saturday in Baltimore, snapping a streak of 21 consecutive starts of six or more innings. He is 8-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 18 career starts against the Twins, his third-most victories against any opponent.
Liriano (11-7, 3.45 ERA): He gave up five runs on six hits in five innings with four walks and five strikeouts and got a no-decision in a win over the White Sox this past weekend. He hasn't lost since July 9 and has five wins in his last eight starts. Liriano has not pitched six complete innings in each of his past three starts yet is 1-0. Liriano is 5-0 with a 2.45 ERA since the All-Star break, and opponents are batting .224 in seven starts. He's 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA in five apperances against Texas, which includes three starts. His last start was in August 2009, and Liriano gave up seven runs on seven hits in two innings.
Hitters: Josh Hamilton (2-for-5), Michael Young (2-for-7) and David Murphy (3-for-3) have had success against Liriano. Vladimir Guerrero, Jorge Cantu and Elvis Andrus are each 0-for-3 against him. Joe Mauer (9-for-27) and Denard Span (6-for-17) have hit Lee well. But Jim Thome (5-for-24), Delmon Young (3-for-24), Alexi Casilla (2-for-15) and Jason Kubel (2-for-11) have struggled in their careers against Lee.
