Game thoughts: Blown out by the Twins

MINNEAPOLIS -- That was ugly. The Twins jumped on the Rangers early and didn't let up, winning 12-4. That's two straight losses for the Rangers and, if the score in Oakland holds, they'll have lost two games in two days off the AL West lead, putting them 8 games up. The magic number hasn't moved in 48 hours (still at 20).

* RHP Colby Lewis just didn't have it Saturday. He struggled from the start. Lewis walked two of the first three batters he faced and loaded the bases with one out. He got Delmon Young and was one hitter away from getting out of the inning. But J.J. Hardy hit a 3-2 pitch for a ground-rule double to center. Lewis hit Jason Repko to load the basea again and Matt Tolbert cleared them with a triple. Just like that, it was 5-0 Twins.

* Jim Thome was a nightmare for Lewis. He hit a solo homer to lead off the third and then hit a three-run blast in the fourth, taking a curtain call at the urging of the crowd. His second homer ended his afternoon after 3 2/3 innings. Lewis gave up nine runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The eight runs are the second-most allowed in his career. He gave up 10 runs (all earned) with Oakland on May 22, 2007 against the White Sox. That was his debut with Oakland and his only start. Interestingly: Thome hit a 3-run homer in that game.

* OF Josh Hamilton banged into the wall in right-center as he caught Delmon Young's fly ball. Hamilton grimaced as he caught the ball and manager Ron Washington and athletic trainer Jamie Reed came out to check on him. But Hamilton stayed in the game until the sixth, when Washington took him out (along with catcher Bengie Molina) with the score 9-1.

* SS Elvis Andrus came out in the fourth inning with hamstring tightness. Cristian Guzman came in for him and right away, he had to make a few plays and did so, throwing to first to get Drew Butera and flipping to second on a force play.

* Borbon got a two-RBI double in the sixth. But for some reason he tried to go from second to third on a ground ball to third base with no outs and was tagged out. It's another learning experience on the bases for Borbon, who had no reason to try to go to third there.

* Guzman got just his fourth hit as a Ranger when he singled up the middle in the sixth. It was his first hit since Aug. 7. He was on the DL for most of August with a strained quad. He then got a hit in the eighth, marking the first time since July 22 that he had two hits in a game.

* The blowout did allow Washington to rest a few of his regulars as Alex Cora replaced Michael Young in the seventh. Any chance you get to give a few guys some innings off -- no matter if it's on the wrong end of a blowout -- is something you have to take advantage of.

* Rich Harden came in to relieve Dustin Nippert in the sixth. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk. He threw 38 pitches. We'll see if that impacts anything in regards to him possibly starting for Cliff Lee on Tuesday if Lee's back won't allow him to go.

* Dustin Nippert pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief. He said Friday that he wasn't thinking about the ball that hit him in the head earlier this season and that he was just focused on making pitches.

* Pedro Strop walked Michael Cuddyer to put two on with one out in the eighth, but got the next two batters with strikeouts for a scoreless inning of work.
