Rangers want teacher for the offense
Clint Hurdle is officially the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a job that manager Ron Washington feels Hurdle is well suited to do.
"He did a good job in Colorado as manager and he did a great job with us," Washington said. "He's going to be able to help that young team out and get them to play good baseball."
Washington said the club wants someone who can continue what Hurdle started in terms of working with hitters on situational at-bats and making the Rangers offense very versatile.
"It's got to be a guy that can communicate," Washington said. "He has to be able to teach and instruct on all aspects of the offense and help us continue to produce."
Washington said the club hasn't put together a potential list of candidates yet. But it's likely they would talk with some of those hitting coaches they discussed last offseason when Hurdle was hired. That could include Thad Bosley, who was the hitting coach for Oakland for two seasons while Washington was on staff. He was named the head coach of Southwestern College in Phoenix in June.
They could also look at Gary Pettis, Scott Coolbaugh and Johnny Naron internally. Rusty Greer was a finalist when Hurdle got the job.
"Clint was a great fit for the club this year and added a lot to the group," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He came here looking for a challenge, met it, and leaves looking for a new one. We wish him all the best. We're already looking for our new hitting coach, and I expect will begin interviews after the GM meetings. We won't have any comment on potential candidates until we finalize who's on that list."
