Tough day for Tommy Hunter
Hunter got sent to the showers with two outs in the fourth inning, having allowed seven runs to the San Francisco Giants. The last three were of the unearned variety, coming when center field Julio Borbon committed his third error of the spring, appearing to lose a bases-loaded fly ball in the sun.
It was an ugly ending to a poor outing by Hunter, who gave up nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. He had five strikeouts and didn't allow any walks, but it was far from an encouraging afternoon for the right-hander, whose ERA this spring is 8.31.
"This spring stinks," Hunter said. "This is not what you want to do."
Hunter said he felt like he had good stuff, but he stuck with his fastball too much. He said the Giants got a hit on only one off-speed pitch, a Pablo Sandoval RBI triple on a curveball Hunter left up in the zone in the first inning.
"Actually, I felt really, really good," said Hunter, who mentioned that he might have thrown more changeups in this game than he did all of last season. "They hit fastballs. I didn't go to Plan B fast enough."
Hunter gave up a pair of runs in the first, which was highlighted by Sandoval's RBI triple. Right fielder David Murphy couldn't cut off the ball in the gap, allowing it to roll to the wall and letting Sandoval rumble into third.
Sandoval also got the Giants going in the fourth inning, when two of the five runs allowed were earned. Sandoval singled, stole second and scored on Brandon Belt's RBI double down the right-field line in that frame.
"I didn't give the team a chance to win," Hunter said. "That's your main objective as a starter and I didn't get it done."
