SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Rangers hoped to have their starting rotation set by now, but they didn't have a firm deadline entering spring training.
No decisions have been made, but there is a deadline now.
The decisions will be made by the end of next week, manager Ron Washington said. That's a must because the pitchers who will head to the bullpen after being stretched out as starter candidates need to prepare for relief work.
"Those guys need to get the ball on back-to-back days," Washington said. "We’ll have a decision by then. We certainly haven’t made it yet."
UPDATE: Pitching coach Mike Maddux said on ESPN 103.3's Ben and Skin Show that the top four spots are pretty much set. C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis entered the spring as locks. Matt Harrison (based on his terrific spring) and Tommy Hunter (based on his track record) are very likely to begin the season in the rotation. That leaves one spot up for grabs.
