ARLINGTON, Texas -- Manager Ron Washington stresses that he wants his catchers to call a good game, get the pitchers through an outing and play defense before he worries about anything at the plate.

But so far this season, Yorvit Torrealba and Mike Napoli have struggled to get things going with their bats. Going into Sunday's game, Napoli was hitting .197 but did have six homers and 16 RBIs. Torrealba was batting .220 with three homers and seven RBIs.

Torrealba, the club's starting catcher, did not play Sunday. He his hitless in his last 21 at-bats, marking five straight starts without a hit. He is 5-for-44 in his last 13 games, dropping his average from .292 to .220, his lowest since April 5 (.200). Torrealba is disappointed things haven't gone better and was working on his swing during batting practice Sunday.

"When you're in a swoon like he's in, you'd be frustrated too," Washington said. "It's not easy to know you're capable of doing something and it's not happening. It's tough. But once again, we're not giving up on him."

Washington said Napoli played Sunday because he wanted the former Angel to play two of the three games against his former team. Napoli started the season red hot, hitting safely in seven of the first 11 starts. But coming into Sunday's game, Napoli was 4-for-39 (.103) in his last 15 games to drop from a .313 to .197.

Napoli had a check-swing single to right that loaded the bases in the eighth inning Sunday. The Rangers eventually scored that inning on Chris Davis' RBI single. For a guy in a slump, that was a big hit and Napoli smiled as he ran to first.

"It was awesome," Napoli said. "It was the greatest feeling. I was so glad I got a hit. I enjoyed every moment as I ran down the line. Hopefully it gets me going."
