ARLINGTON, Texas -- Closer Neftali Feliz, in a brief conversation with ESPNDallas, said he needs to throw another pitch other than his fastball.
Feliz, who blew his third save opportunity of the season Friday night in a 12-7 loss to the Kansas City Royals, threw 10 consecutive fastballs before Alex Gordon stroked a 99 mph fastball to the second deck in right field.
After the ninth inning, Feliz had a talk with pitching coach Mike Maddux, who told him he needed to throw his slider more to mix things up. Feliz did in the 10th and had a 1-2-3 inning.
"I need to use my second pitch," Feliz said prior to batting practice Saturday afternoon. "My fastball is my best pitch, but I need to use my breaking ball."
Despite throwing 26 pitches Friday, Feliz is available tonight. In fact, manager Ron Washington said Feliz asked about pitching in the 11th inning, but the Rangers declined.
"We need to forget about it," Feliz said regarding the blown save. "I've got to throw my off-speed stuff and keep the ball low."
