Who starts in CF when Julio Borbon returns?

May, 31, 2011
I realize the timing of this question, fresh off a three-hit game for Endy Chavez that included a home run, may alter the results, but it's one that will face the Rangers at some point.

Julio Borbon was in Double-A Frisco for a rehab assignment yesterday and will head to Triple-A Round Rock today. He should get more chances to test that left hamstring over the next few days.

But what happens when Borbon is ready to return? Chavez has taken advantage of his opportunity. He's 13-for-33 (and he started 0-for-9) since getting called up. He's playing well on defense covering ground in center, has a better arm than Borbon and has added a productive bat to the mix of late.

At this point, I think manager Ron Washington has to play the hot hand. Is there a risk that Chavez could get overexposed? Sure. But that's a risk for a lot of players that haven't had the opportunity to play all the time at the major league level (this is Chavez's first action since June 2009). I still think Borbon can be an important, productive player for the Rangers. But he can do that as a depth guy for now with Chavez playing well. Then, Washington can ease Borbon back into the lineup (unless Chavez gives him no reason to do so).

What do you think the Rangers should do in center field when Borbon returns? Is it Borbon's spot no matter what?
