Notes: Elvis Andrus gets day off

ARLINGTON, Texas -- In an effort to monitor the heat and give his players rest during a difficult stretch that includes 17 of 20 games on the road, manager Ron Washington decided to give Elvis Andrus the day off Tuesday. He'll look to give a handful of his other players time off in the next week or so, as well.

"Elvis was all over the bag in Tampa Bay and Cleveland," Washington said. "Last night he just looked a little sluggish, a little late on things. So I pay close attention to him because I ran him in the ground last year and I'm not going to run him in the ground this year. And usually when I notice that on Elvis and I give him a day, he comes back strong."

The numbers support Washington's theory. He's given Andrus four days off so far in 2011 and the game after those off days, Andrus is hitting 4-for-16 (.250) with two homers and four RBIs. So watch out for Andrus on Wednesday.

Other notes:

*Brandon Webb still has not thrown a bullpen session, but he did throw long toss on Tuesday. He said he threw for about 15 minutes from about 150 feet. He said he felt good and hopes to get back on a mound for a bullpen session in the next few days, but no plan is in place yet.

*Endy Chavez is not playing Tuesday because he fouled a ball off his foot. Washington said Chavez was still a little sore and he wants to get him some time off. With a lefty on the mound tomorrow, Chavez won't play again until Thursday.
