ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rangers catcher Mike Napoli appears to be getting closer to a rehab assignment. The question is when.
Napoli took full swings with a regular bat on Friday and said he felt no pain. He'll do more of that on Saturday and then will attempt to take full batting practice on Sunday. If all goes well, he hopes to be on a rehab assignment while the club is in Houston. That might be at Triple-A Round Rock with the Double-A teams getting Tuesday and Wednesday off for their All-Star break.
Manager Ron Washington said he wasn't sure of the timetable for Napoil, whom he called a "gamer." But Napoli could take more swings on Monday during the off day and then get in some rehab games shortly thereafter. He is eligible to come off the disabled list on Tuesday, but will need to play a full game at catcher in the minors and get some at-bats in before he can return. The earliest appears to be the weekend series against the Florida Marlins.
Napoli said the only soreness he feels in his oblique is from the cortisone shot he got earlier in the week. He also ran the bases on Friday, going from first to third with no issues.
* Darren O'Day is slated to pitch Friday and Saturday with Triple-A Round Rock to get some time in consecutive outings. If that goes well, O'Day could return soon. Does that mean Tuesday in Houston? Difficult to say if it would be that quick. Washington didn't want to put any timeframe on it, saying the club had to see how O'Day came out of his consecutive outings this weekend.
