Mike Napoli expected back Monday

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mike Napoli is expected to return to the Rangers roster Monday after a weekend rehab stint in Triple-A Round Rock, manager Ron Washington said.

Napoli is recovering from a strained left oblique muscle. He went on the DL retroactively June 12.

In three rehab games, Napoli is 3-for-10 with two home runs, both of which came in Saturday night’s game. Napoli’s ninth inning, three-run homer tied the score, 7-7, and forced extra frames in Round Rock’s 9-7 win.

Napoli is scheduled to be the designated hitter for Round Rock on Sunday in his last rehab start before returning to Arlington.

Before going on the DL, Napoli was batting .221 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. He leads Rangers catchers in ERA while behind the plate at 2.97.

“He’s got a great feel for the hitters which makes him make our pitchers do what they have to do to get the hitter,” Washington said. “The way he calls a game, he’s been taught well.”

* Despite his recent inconsistency and forgettable outing Saturday, Washington said Derek Holland is still slated for his next start. Holland lasted just two-thirds of an inning against the Marlins on Saturday, allowing five runs on four hits including and a Hanley Ramirez grand slam.

“I don’t think anyone of us would want to carry what he went through around,” Washington said. “I don’t care what you do for a living, you wouldn’t want to have a bad day on the job and your boss not give you another opportunity.”

* With a win Sunday, the Rangers would finish 10-8 in interleague play marking the second straight year they finished above .500 against the National League in the regular season.
